Delores Black, administrative associate senior in Mary Morgan Moore Department of Music in the College of Fine Arts and Communication at Lamar University, has been selected to receive the 2017 Texas State University System Regents’ Staff Award.

A member of the LU staff for 43 years, Black has worked in the music department in many capacities. She is an alumna of LU, holding a Bachelor of Science in music education, Class of 1974, and a Master of Music Education, 1984.

“Ms. Black has been a staple of the Lamar University community since 1975,” wrote President Ken Evans in the nomination for the award. “Her contributions to our university and surrounding community have truly made a difference in the lives of many.” 

During her career she has received the President’s Staff Award, 1979, President’s Award, 1991, the Distinguished Staff Award, 1998, the Southeast Texas Arts Council Outstanding Achievement by a Volunteer in Music award in 2000, and Lamar University Student Organization’s Advisor of the Year award in 2006. She served as LU Chapter Advisor for Delta Omicron International Music Fraternity from 1977 to 2006.

An active participant in the university’s Staff Senate and Lamar University Staff Association, Black will receive the Regents’ Staff Excellence Award at the TSUS Board of Regents meeting February 15-16, on the LU campus.

Black is also well known for her active involvement in the Beaumont community. She performs with the Symphony of Southeast Texas Chorus, serves as membership chair and corresponding secretary for Beaumont Interfaith Choral Society, is the business manager of Beaumont Civic Opera, and has performed with the Beaumont Community Players.

“Delores ranks as one of the top administrative assistants at Lamar,” wrote Kurt Gilman, associate professor of violin and viola and director of string activities, who has worked with her for more than three decades. “Her long-time devotion to all aspects of music curriculum, advising, record keeping, and communication with students, chair and faculty has resulted in a continuing high level of achievement. This has also led to the success and stability of the music department at Lamar.”
