Science DMZ

What is Science DMZ?

The Science DMZ is a portion of the network, built at the network perimeter that is designed such that the equipment, configuration, and security policies are optimized for high-performance scientific applications. The Science DMZ model was originally developed by ESnet to address common performance issues at research institutions.

The Lamar University Science DMZ is comprised of equipment which acts as a temporary repository for large data sets awaiting transfer to an alternate research facility for computational analysis. Once the data sets have been compiled and returned to the LU Science DMZ the data sets are picked up by the researcher and saved to their local storage array.

Topology design considerations behind the Science DMZ at Lamar University

national science foundation logoLamar University applied for and received a National Science Foundation (NSF) grant to implement the DMZ.  The Science DMZ has 10gbps of bandwidth dedicated to campus research from Lonestar Education and Research Network (LEARN)  Equipment purchased included:
  • High-speed 10gbps switches at the campus perimeter for the Science DMZ
  • High speed Data transfer node with a SSD raid with over 5TB of storage
  • Perfsonar testing machine for testing available bandwidth
