LEA 2-Step: Security Beyond the Password

LEA 2-Step Header

Lamar University applications such as LU Email, LU Learn (Blackboard), and Cardinal Purch that use the LEA requires a 2-Step login process when accessed off-campus for all users.

NEW UPDATE FOR JANUARY 2026

What does that mean?

LU implemented an additional layer of security via the Duo Mobile platform for applications which we call the LEA 2-Step. Instead of solely relying on something you know (like a password), this process requires two forms of identification, such as something you know, something you have, or something you are.  This approach is to enhance the security of your accounts.

What do I have to do?

After you log into an application with your LEA username and password, you will decide which authentication options to use as your 2nd Step:

  • Duo PUSH (Duo Mobile App required)
  • Duo Mobile passcode (Duo Mobile App required)
  • Security Key (Yubikey and other brands)
  • Platform Authenticators (Apple Touch ID, Face ID, Windows Hello, local Android biometrics)
  • SMS Text message passcode (cell phone that can receive text messages)

Note : It is recommended that at least two devices are enrolled with one as a backup option, especially when registering Platform Authenticators. These authenticators are usually tied to and will only work with the device you registered with.  Without it, you will be unable to use your 2nd Step for access.

Note : Access to Lamar VPN requires the Duo Mobile App to receive a PUSH
